outside playtime

This afternoon I took the kids outside for some outdoor playtime. Not to be confused with inside playtime; eat, sleep, play, that is pretty much their day. So we go outside and Laney has no interest in me. She is stalking the rocks again. I'm pretty sure it is a snake she is after, so I help her, for some stupid reason. I move a rock aside and whatever it is, she is on it. She grabs it and runs out into the yard before I know what it is. I get out there and all I see left is a light blue twitching tail. I didn't want to help her catch a lizard, I thought we were on snake patrol. Then she goes back to the rocks. This time I hold her back when I move the rock, this time it was a snake, and because I was holding her back, THIS TIME it got away. It went on the other side of the fence. For some stupid reason, I let Laney out to catch the snake and once she decided the snake was gone, she took off. Across the street and past my neighbor's house. So I decided to give myself one minute to catch the dog, after that, it just isn't going to happen. So since my dog was loose and my kids were in the backyard, I ran as fast as a crazed and determined mother and dog owner could. Luckily, Laney had stopped in my neighbor's backyard to sniff something and caught her before she took off again. She knew she was in trouble and halfway home she tried to do the collar slip but I was doing the pissed off 'you aren't slipping your collar' thing where I had twisted it around my hand. That was really stupid of me. I can't believe I let her out of the yard. She's gotten out in Texas and at my mom's before, she always came back. I guess I can respect that. She's lucky that she hasn't been hit by a car because she isn't smart enough to avoid them. That is my big worry. But she's back safe in the yard, alive and well to annoy me for another day. -sigh-
