Corn pickin' fun
Nicole's parents plant a bunch of sweet corn every year. The sole purpose is for them to freez a bunch of it for themselves for the rest of the year. And then they pick the rest and give it away. I was there picking on Thursday night. I brought home three bags. Like feed bags, not grocery bags. When I showed up there, I was alone, waiting for Elliott and Nicole. I'm familiar with the Deppe's dogs, Ivy and Oscar. Oscar is a giant brown lab. After his greeting he trotted off and picked up his half eaten baby pig carcas so he could finish eating it. He had eaten all the guts out but still had the legs, face and ribs to go. I watched him pick it up and eat it in different places for about ten minutes until Nicole and Elliott showed up. I said to Nicole, "You know Oscar was up here eating a pig?" She said, "Was he up here on the back porch?" Me, "Yeah" Nicole, "He knows my mom isn't here. He eats a pig every day and if he takes it on the back porch my mom throws it out." You see, there is a dead pig bucket where all the babies that died that day go. Oscar, I'm sure, gets his daily afternoon snack out of there. The first time Nicole showed Elliott the pig farm, she saw a runt in a litter. She picked it up, said, "This one isn't going to make it." and slammed its head against the wall and threw it in the bucket. Why Elliott didn't run screaming down the street, I'll never know, because he's a weenie and I'm sure he still has nightmares. I, however, would be horrified if Todd purposely ran over a forest creature with the car, which he would not do. So anyway, I froze a bunch of corn for myself. I gave some to Katie and she froze a bunch for herself. I took some to Justin's birthday party yesterday and we grilled some. So I've been spreading the joy of corn. And horrifing all my blog readers with pig stories, but you know... give and take.

Wow, that is an awesome story. I like the seemingly harmless lead-in about corn. Speaking of corn, is this the same corn that we will be enjoying on the float trip?

You see, I was under the impression that I would be able to pick the corn right before the trip when I told Angie I would bring corn. Nicole informed me that corn picking season is about to end, like today. So unless it will keep in the fridge or freezer until then, it will be store bought corn. I will have to consult with the corn expert and get back to you.
