the snake handler

I let the kids play in the backyard every afternoon. They get up from a nap, we go out, they get as dirty as they want for as long as they want, and then we go take a bath. This is how it goes. Isabella usually wants inside first, as was the case today. I let her in and she turned on the tv, I went back out and Gabe was out there picking leaves off of a bush in the back corner of the yard, pretty typical behavior. I was standing there on the deck watching him, I didn't have binoculars or anything, but I was actively watching him, he was pretty far away and I could only see half of him because of the bush. The next thing I knew, he was HOLDING a four foot long black snake. It wasn't whipping around or anything, he was like fuckin' Ace Ventura out there communing with nature without a care in the world. Of coarse, I freakin' loose it, I don't know what kind of snake it was from where I was, and I read that even non-poisonous ones can bite, so I scream, "Gabe, NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!" And I start running down there, well, my freak out, freaked my dog, who, bless her heart, was coming to MY rescue, however, she was in such a hurry, she bit it coming up the stairs to me while I was trying to go down the stairs to him. We straightened ourselves out and got down to the end of the yard to Gabe, as the snake was calmly making its way through the fence and Gabe was wondering what all the fuss was about as he was bidding his new friend goodbye. All I could do was yell at the dog, "Where you at?! Where you at!? You patrol this place all day long and a giant snake you miss!?" She sniffed the tail as it was going through the fence and she jumped back like, "Look at the size of that thing!" I don't know if he picked it up or if it slithered off the bush to him, all I know is that the kid and the snake were very happy with their interaction and I can't get the picture of him holding the snake out of my mind. It is kind of funny... now.
